Frequently asked questions...
How soon can I start scar treatment?
Scar therapy can begin once all scabs have healed. For serious injuries or major surgeries, we may need to check with your Consultant to ensure there are no concerns or restrictions before starting treatment. Ideally, scar therapy can commence approximately 8 weeks post-surgery, depending on the complexity and invasiveness of the procedure. Larger surgeries may require more time for deep tissue healing. Contact us early so we can coordinate with your consultant, if necessary, and schedule a convenient appointment for you.
Can I bring someone with me?
If you are nervous about your appointment, there is no need to worry, but you are welcome to bring a friend or family member.
Is treatment painful?
Both Osteopath and Scar Therapy treatment should not be painful. During the assessment phase, certain movements may be slightly aggravating of your pain. During treatment, some minor discomfort may be felt. Some patients can experience some post-treatment soreness, this is totally normal and should only last 24-48 hours.
What should I bring to my first appointment??
During your first appointment, we advise bringing or coming in a comfortable set of clothes, for example a pair of shorts and a vest, this will enable a better view of your body during assessment and treatment. Towels are also provided. Furthermore we will ask a variety of questions surrounding your medical history, so a note of any medication you take or results from any investigations/tests/scans.
How many treatment will I need?
For both osteopathy and scar therapy the number of treatments will vary depending on the problem and individual. For scar therapy specifically, usually 4-8 treatments are recommended between 1-4 weeks apart (depending on the age of your scar).
What should I put on my scar to assist healing?
During your consultation and treatment, Milly can advise you on products that may assist the healing process, including creams, oils and silicone.
Do I need a GP referral before my Osteopath appointment?
There is no need to gain a referral from your GP, but of course you can make them aware of your attendance. In some cases they may have suggested visiting an Osteopath if they are already aware of your symptoms.

If you present with any symptoms that Milly believes requires medical attention she will refer you back to your GP either prior or alongside your osteopathic treatment.
Can I have scar treatment with an ongoing cancer diagnosis?
If you're still receiving care from your consultant after a cancer diagnosis, we typically reach out to them, with your consent, before proceeding with treatment to ensure it's suitable for you. It's often beneficial to undergo scar treatment after surgery but before starting radiotherapy, as complications in scar healing and tissue fibrosis (RFS) can occur due to radiotherapy.
Will my scar vanish?
No, we cannot make your scar disappear and results from treatment vary. Early treatment is recommend for best cosmetic results, although it is never too late to start.
